.Background: From the main street of Lyon’s old town, Rue Saint-Jean, turn north to Rue du Boeuf, where you will easily find the eye-catching “Tour Rose”. The tower is located in a 16th century mansion at 16 Rue du Boeuf, originally called the Maison du Crible.
The Rose Tower is said to have been built in the 16th century, and the buildings around it in the 15th and 18th centuries. Many searches have failed to find out what the tower was used for, except that the name of its architect was Sertio, and the buildings around the tower look very old indeed, with some of the former front porches vaguely discernible. In the courtyard wall below the tower there are several nailed gates, one of which has a brass plaque indicating that this is the French Orthodox Theological Society. In the corner of the courtyard there appears to be an old abandoned well.
.Rosy Tower
Legend has it that a young princess was once locked in the tower by her jealous stepmother. As the princess gazed out of the high window and dreamed of being rescued by a knight in shining armour, she noticed a small rose growing at the foot of the tower.
She called out to the rose and it turned its face up to her. From then on, she would talk to the rose every day as it grew taller, rising ever higher, until it finally reached all the way up the tower and to her window and the princess was able to climb it down to the ground and escape.
