Shell Keep Castles

A shell keep is a style of medieval fortification, is defined by a strong wall built on top of a mount of an earlier earthwork of the motte-and-bailey type, either pre Norman, or hastily thrown up by the first Norman settlers after the Conquest , regarded as the successors to motte-and-bailey castles, with the wooden fence around the top of the motte replaced by a stone wall.
